GRACE NOTES
IN MEMORIAM

Joan Martin Yet another pillar of the Grace Cottage community has gone far too soon, and her sudden death on Thanksgiving Day has left a gap that many are working to fill.

The longtime coordinator for volunteers at Grace Cottage, and a volunteer receptionist and courier herself, Joan was twice named the Auxilian of the Year. On Fair Day, she could be found at her famous "Jams, Jellies and Relishes" booth; a great deal of the product she sold had been made in Joan's own kitchen.

Homage To Joan Martin
by Warren Kronemeyer

High on a hill above Townshend
Lived a lady - one of a kind.
Lucky we were to have as a friend
This woman who knew her own mind.
When she saw assistance was needed
She reached out and grabbed a free oar
Her own inner voice she heeded
And helped row Grace Cottage to shore.
For years she played a mighty part
And has forever left her mark
This woman with a stalwart heart
She was our Joan - our Joan of Arc!

"We had the option of a big, medical nursing home, but chose Stratton House for the personal care and atten- tion my Dad could get because of the small size. I had an initial meeting with the administrator, and I could tell by the way she explained the philosophy of respect, caring, and maintaining independence that this was where I want- ed my dad to be. I can't say enough about the staff. There is so little turnover, and they obviously love what they do."
