Newsletter - Summer 2000
The creation of "A Garden of Grace" continues to be a labor of love involving countless committed volunteers. The rock garden was built under the supervision of Bob Schreiner and Willene Clark; labor for construction of the stunning gazebo and lattice-work fence and flowerbeds was donated by Ken Hoffman. Joel Tidd, Brian and Nancy Evans, and Newfane Garden Club members have also been lending their green thumbs to the project. On April 23, 1999, the two-acre Mollie Beattie Woodland Garden was dedicated to the memory of the former Director of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, who died at Grace Cottage in 1996. As visitors enter this peaceful wooded sanctuary, they first pass a plaque mounted on a boulder, inscribed with one of Mollie's favorite poems, Wild Geese by Mary Oliver. Benches have been placed at several points along the trail that winds through the forest, offering places for repose and reflection. Now, thanks to donors, the garden immediately outside the Stratton House Nursing Home also has a name: A Garden of Grace. A dedication ceremony for this garden will be held at 1 p.m. on Sunday, July 23, and the public is encouraged to attend. The Stratton House Activity/Dining Room was dedicated on June 26, 1999, in memory of Dorothy and Elias Thall, D.D.S. |
