Newsletter - Fall/Winter
2001
This weekend after being stung by two yellow jackets, I developed a potentially life- ending ana- phylactic reaction, which was not responding to injected adrenaline. When I arrived at the Grace Cottage Hospital Emergency Room, I was com- passionately, immediately, and professionally cared for by Dr. Tim Shafer and Bess Richardson, RN, who was in charge of the nursing staff in the ER. As a result of their compassionate and excellent care, I was able to go home some three hours later relieved to be alive, breathing, and not nearly as swollen as when I had arrived. As my good wife drove me home, I recalled his- torical objections to the presence of a small coun- try hospital in Vermont. I wondered if the people who made those objections understood that a drive of 17 miles when one 's life is in jeopardy is far shorter than the 34 it would have taken to get me to Brattleboro Memorial Hospital or the 62 miles it would have taken to get me to Dartmouth. I am most appreciative of the excellent care pro- vided by Grace Cottage Hospital, and I am most thankful for their presence there. [Dr.] Bob Backus
A very satisfied and a very thankful patient
