News - Best Fair Day Ever!

"It's the best Fair Day ever," was the refrain heard
around the Common. Perhaps fairgoers were referring to the beautiful
weather, the visit by Governor Jim Douglas to cut the birthday cake,
the New England Performing Arts circus troupe hanging from a trapeze
by the gazebo, the crowd, the children cavorting in the fountain
with Grace Cottage beach balls...whatever it was, it was magical.
See you on August 7, 2010, for the 60th Annual Hospital Fair Day!
Every year, we sing praises to the Fair Day auction, which exceeded
all expectations this year by raising over $40,000.
This year we also praise the unsung heroes of the Fair. Who are
these unsung heroes? They are the booth chairpeople and the workers.
Weeks (and, in some cases, months!) before Fair Day, they plan,
recruit helpers, and gather their goods. This year the task was
made more difficult because of very heavy rain all day and night
Friday. Before dawn on Fair Day, booth chairs and other volunteers
descended on the Common to unload their trucks and set up for the
big day.
The army of unsung heroes also includes those who prepare the Townshend
Common, direct traffic, park cars, and empty trash cans all day.
Early Sunday morning more volunteers arrive to remove all vestiges
of the Fair from the Common.
All this effort made it possible for the Auxiliary to contribute
a record-setting $60,000 to Grace Cottage Hospital, which will be
used to purchase a system of heart monitors.
Travels with Charlie – Thanks to Charlie
Jarras, who taped and produced a 40-minute television special about
this year's Hospital Fair Day. The segment was aired on Brattleboro
Community Television.
