| IN MEMORIAM
BRIAN EVANS
A
director of Grace Cottage Foundation since 1998 and treasurer of
the board for the past four years, Brian Evans, 89, died on June
21st. A native of Glen Cove, NY, Brian graduated from Lehigh Univ.
and enjoyed a 37-year career in the aerospace industry. At Grumman
Corp., he managed sub-contracts for the Apollo Lunar Landing Module.
Brian and his wife, Nancy, raised their four children in Locust
Valley, NY, but spent as much time at their second home in Townshend
as possible, retiring here in 1976. When not golfing or spending
time with his beloved family, Brian paid attention to “all things
Grace Cottage,” constantly questioning and brainstorming. He is
very greatly missed.
JOHN KENNETH GALBRAITH
One
of the 20th Century’s most influential economists, John Kenneth
Galbraith was involved in the founding of Grace Cottage. When he
and his wife, Kitty, bought a farmhouse on the border of Townshend,
Newfane and Wardsboro in 1947, it didn’t take long for Galbraith
to get to know “young Dr. Otis.” Over decades, the Galbraiths always
responded when Grace Cottage needed help. It was Galbraith who,
in 2002, called Grace Cottage “my favorite institution in all the
world...not only the most charming [hospital], but the best in the
country.” His death on April 29, at age 98, leaves a void.
