FAIR DAY—The word that comes to mind when I recall
this year’s Hospital Fair Day is “cool.”
The cool weather allowed people to roam the Common all
day without suffering from the effects of typical August (even
in Vermont) heat. Valley families, friends and neighbors
chatted with each other throughout the day. The Fair, always
truly a community event, became even more so.
“Cool” also describes the entire process of set up and clean
up of the Common. Thanks to Jim Crozier’s hard work,
there were no hitches in the weeklong execution of detail
after detail: running electric power to many areas of the
Common, getting the booths back together, putting tents up,
and setting up refrigerators and/or freezers at the many
booths serving food. Earlier in the week, when it was learned
that we needed new storage after the Fair for the booth structure,
and bingo chairs and tables, many people worked successfully
together to find new storage barns.
“Cool” appeared to be the demeanor of booth chairs, auction
leaders, and volunteers. They worked long hours as they
served Fair attendees long into the afternoon.
“Cool” was the atmosphere that pervaded the Common during
the entire day. The Fair seemed to be the “in” place to
be. From the dunking booth where kids could sink doctors
and the high school principal, to the later afternoon sing
along with an Elvis impersonator, fairgoers took pleasure in
the day’s activities.
Thanks to the Auxiliary officers and Fair Day committee and
to all the volunteers, it looks like we have about $48,000 to
contribute to the hospital. We’ll be meeting with hospital
staff to determine how this will be spent.

MEMBERSHIP NEWS—We’re still receiving an outstanding
response to our membership drive. As of September, we have
received $9,500 in dues and contributions. Remember, it’s
never too late to join the Grace Cottage Hospital Auxiliary!
Folks who made a membership contribution of $20 or more
were entered in the drawing for a “Luxury” weekend in the
city. We are pleased to announce that Janet and Alan Bills of
Wardsboro are the lucky winners.
