Wishes Fulfilled...
  • The request for a pulse oximeter was a popular one—we received funding for three of them. Now the residents of Heins Home, Tim Shafer’s office and Grace Cottage Family Health all have pulse oximeters, thanks to Ethel Boyd, Judy Dickerman-Nelson and Marguerite Wyman via The Panwy Foundation.
  • Arthur Barbas funded a Hi-Lo bed for Heins Home, and Kay and John Barbas donated another. Thanks to them, two of our residents will sleep in greater comfort!
  • Grace Cottage Adult Day Scholarships are being funded by the Brattleboro Rotary (thanks to Bob Gannett), the Ellen Willard Trust, Dennis & Charlotte Choleva, Mark & Liz Richards, Molly Martin, and The Panwy Foundation. Thanks to this generosity, people who would otherwise be isolated in their own homes are able to attend our Adult Day program. Jack and Sherry Greene decided that, in lieu of exchanging Christmas gifts with one another this year, they would fund an Adult Day Scholarship and a holiday party for Heins Home residents.
  • Gardeners Linda Anelli and Yvonne Knapp generously responded to our plea for help with Grace Cottage’s plants and flowers.
  • Stan Valencis has volunteered his artistic ability, and he is now in the process of painting bright, cheery floral murals on the long hallway at Heins Home.
  • Erroll Lent donated a new DVD player, in memory of his wife, Alice, for use by Heins Home residents in their living room. Polaroid cameras were donated by Marguerite DeMotte and Mary Folsom.

Wishes Made…

  • New or Used Tape Cassette Players: Many of the residents at Heins Home would like to listen to Books on Tape borrowed from the Townshend Library, in their rooms, but they don’t have any portable cassette tape players.
  • Hi-Lo Beds: Many of the residents of Heins Home have difficulty maneuvering when getting in and out of bed, and these beds that can be raised and lowered would make such a difference. The cost is $1,500 each.
  • “Drive People Happy!”: Couriers to drive to Brattleboro and back during the daytime (to deliver X-rays, etc. to BMH), telephone receptionists for nighttimes and weekends, and drivers to take people to medical appointments are all needed, especially during the winter months. These are all volunteer positions.
  • Ambulance Stretcher: A heavy-duty stretcher is needed for our second ambulance; the one on our new ambulance works perfectly, and it’s safer if the stretchers are identical. The cost is $3,500.
  • Continuous Passive Motion Machine for Knees: Our current model is very large and heavy, and doesn’t fit shorter patients. After knee surgery, this machine is used to lift the patient’s leg at the thigh and bends the knee from the calf. Cost is $2,400.
  • Blood Warmer: To bring blood for transfusion up to the temperature of the patient. The cost is $1,493.
  • Magnifying Opthalmoscope: Permits our practitioners to look at the back side of the eye—particularly important for diabetic patients. The cost is $390.
