KIMONA ALIN
GRACE COTTAGE'S NEW
FAMILY PRACTICE PHYSICIAN
On
October 2, 2002, Dr. Kimona Alin joined the medical team at the
Otis Health Care Center, and is now accepting new patients. Born
in Varberg, Sweden, Kimona received her elementary and secondary
school education in her native country. "My mother, my sister
and I were often in the U.S., though, because my father was a
professor of Ancient Greek and Roman History at the State University
of New York in Stony Brook, Long Island," Kimona recalled.
After graduating in 1988 from the State University of New York
with a degree in biochemistry, Kimona completed the MD/PhD program
at Columbia University (her PhD was in Microbiology). Her residency,
in orthopedics, was at Albert Einstein University in New York.
"The first two years of orthopedics were great," she
said, "but the third year is spent in the operating room
and that's when I discovered that I'd made a mistake. It wasn't
a good fit because I never had a chance to really get to know
my patients."
Although her classmates tried their best to change her mind,
Kimona knew that a family practice was what she wanted to pursue.
She spent the next two-and-a-half years at the University of Massachusetts,
with a residency at their rural clinic in Barre, MA, and earned
her degree in Family Medicine.
Kimona is also an adventurer: during summers, vacations, and
breaks between degrees, Kimona would fill a backpack and hop on
a plane in order to hitchhike through Europe and Africa; she even
once climbed Mount Kilimanjaro. She's run in several marathons
(Stockholm, New York and the Marine Corps Marathon in Washington,
D.C.) and is an avid skier. She says she has received a very warm
welcome at Grace Cottage!
